2. Occupational Emphasis (48 credit hours)
This module relates to your prior career or college. It can be completed with academic or technical/vocational transfer work or credit awarded for work/life experience, training or examinations. Occupational Education 4350 (Occupational Assessment) should be taken as early as possible in the program.  You must have an overall transfer GPA of 2.25 and if you have Texas State University coursework, a Texas State GPA of 2.25 is required.

Students enrolling in OCED 4350 are strongly encouraged to have completed English 1310 and 1320 due to the writing-intensive nature of the course. Students at the Round Higher campus should complete all core and the foreign language before beginning classes in Round Rock.

To complete the credit hours required for this module you can earn:

  • up to 24 semester hours for your work/life experience
  • up to 30 semester hours for non-collegiate sponsored instruction or training in business situations
  • an unlimited number of hours for CLEP or DANTES exams

3. Professional Development (18 credit hours)
This sequence allows you to individualize your degree. With assistance from your degree advisor, you will choose 3000 and/or 4000 level courses from at least three academic departments.

4. Foreign Language (8 credit hours)
You must complete six to eight hours of the same foreign language unless you completed two years of the same language in high school.

5. Internship (6 credit hours)
During your last semester you will take OCED 4360, Cooperative Occupational Education Readiness, and OCED 4361, Practicum in Cooperative Occupational Education.

Prerequisites for enrollment in OCED 4360/4361:

  • completion of the core curriculum requirements and foreign language (if required)
  • completion of the Occupational Emphasis and Elective modules
  • minimum GPA of 2.25 in 12 of the 18 hours of Professional Development (due to the intensity of the internship it is recommended that no courses be taken with the internship)
  • minimum Texas State GPA of 2.0
  • must be in the last semester of the degree
  • orientation attendance during the semester prior to enrollment

6. Electives
You will complete seven to 10 semester hours of complementary electives, which you will choose in consultation with your advisor. The number of electives required is determined by the number of hours you need to reach 120 hours.

Degrees must be completed in six years. If this is not done, the degree plan will require revision.

HOW TO COMPLETE THE BAAS DEGREE

New students who meet with advisors and review their DAR (degree audit report) on CATSWEB often ask in what order they should take their courses and what courses they should take each semester.  The following statements are designed to answer those questions.  It is important to take courses only listed on the DAR because courses taken that are not listed will be electives.  Too many electives can only slow your progress toward graduation.  Note the following steps that should be taken immediately after OCED 4350 (Occupational Assessment).  If you can return to the junior college and complete the core before taking OCED 4350, this is even a stronger alternative.  However, remember 66 hours is the maximum transfer hours from a junior college.  You make take up to two more courses with written permission after OCED 4350 has been completed and the DAR has been finalized.  The steps below should be done immediately after OCED 4350:

  1. Complete your core requirements first through regular courses, CLEP exams, DANTES exams or correspondence. NOTE: No more than 30 hours of combined extension and correspondence courses may apply toward a degree.
  2. Complete your foreign language. If you had two full years of the same language in high school, send your official transcript to the OCED office and that requirement can be waived. This requirement also must be finished before the internship.
  3. If work credit was not enough to finish the Occupational Emphasis module, complete that module as soon as possible.
  4. For both part-time and full-time students, the internship must be taken in the last semester.
  5. Once you have registered for your last semester and are enrolled in the internship, you should apply for graduation online through CATSWEB. Do this at the beginning of your last semester.
