Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, MSIS

The Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (MSIS) is a multi-disciplinary program. The MSIS program is designed to provide skill development in the engineering and enhancement of human performance in business, industry, and governmental organizations. More specifically, human performance technology develops skills in the following areas:

The program is designed for mature students interested in managing an environment of moving targets and discovering new roles of leadership. It is performance-based and individually tailored to meet the educational needs of graduate students. Courses from various schools and departments at Texas State University-San Marcos are integrated into an overall plan to formulate a unique and powerful hybrid degree. Delivery of courses is flexible and will accommodate the needs of a working adult.

MSIS Admission Requirements

Admission to the MSIS program will not require the GRE if the applicant has 2.75 GPA in the last 60 hours of the undergraduate degree. Students who have a GPA of less than 2.75 must take the GRE. However, admission to the program is not made based on the GRE only. Contact the Occupation Education office for more information.

Typical MSIS Degree Plan

with focus on Human Performance Technology

Entry Module -- 9 semester hours
  • CATE 5313D - High Performance Leadership
  • PSY 5315 - Mental Hygiene
  • HHR 5322 - Human Resource Development in Health Sciences

Academic Module -- select 21 semester hours from the following:
  • CATE 5301 - The Technology of Teaching
  • CATE 5306 - Instructional Materials Development Technology
  • CATE 5313F - Human Performance Technology
  • CATE 5341 - Supervision of Human Resources
  • PSY 5385 - Industrial Psychology
  • POSI 5314 - Organizational Theory
  • PHIL 5322 - Professional Ethics

Exit Module -- 9 semester hours These courses are taken sequentially over three semesters.
  • OCED 5300 - Interdisciplinary Research Methods (taught Fall semester only)
  • OCED 5301 - Applied Interdisciplinary Research Part I
  • OCED 5302 - Applied Interdisciplinary Research Part II
The program culminates with both written and oral examinations. Students will receive questions from selected professors to be answered in writing over a set time period. Oral examinations will be held following the grading of the written examination. Students must be successful in each in order to receive their degree. (The student and your adviser should finalize the degree plan during the student's first long semester)
